Can ChatGPT or Claude apply to jobs for you?

What the assistants can do in a browser today.

Anthropic's Claude in Chrome is available on paid Claude plans. Its help center says it can click buttons, type text and fill out forms, and that it pauses to ask you when something needs your approval.

OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT agent is no longer available and points multi-step tasks to ChatGPT Work. Names and features in this area change often, so check the current help center before you plan around one of them.

Where a general agent gets stuck on job applications.

Job applications are full of steps an assistant cannot or should not do alone. Expect it to stop, or to need you, at each of these.

• Accounts: many employers make you create an account on their own site, often with an email verification code only you can see.
• Checks that you are human, such as a CAPTCHA.
• Questions about your own situation: work authorization, sponsorship, salary, start date. An assistant that guesses here puts a wrong answer under your name.
• The resume file: the assistant attaches whatever file it was given. A resume tailored to each job has to exist before the upload step.
• A record: after the chat ends, there is no list of what was sent where unless you asked for one.

Applying to jobs with Claude Code or a script.

Some developers write scripts, with Claude Code or by hand, that open postings and fill forms. That is a software project, not a shortcut. Every employer's form is different, the script breaks when a page changes, and you are responsible for every answer it sends.

If you try it, run it on one application you watch from start to finish, keep eligibility answers as fixed values you wrote yourself, and read the site's terms of use before running automation on it.

A safe way to use a general assistant.

Use the assistant for the thinking and writing, and keep the sending with you.

• Paste the full job description and your main resume, with personal details it does not need removed.
• Ask for a table of each requirement and the exact experience that supports it, and flag requirements with no evidence.
• Ask for reordered bullets and factual wording changes only: no new tools, numbers, titles or responsibilities.
• Draft answers to the employer's written questions, then edit them into your own words.
• Fill and submit the form yourself, and log the role, the date and the resume version you sent.
