Workday autofill with resume not working? Why, and how to fix it

First, match the symptom to the cause.

Workday's documentation calls this feature Quick Apply: it fills application fields from your resume automatically. Employers label the button differently, for example Autofill from Resume. Look at what happened after you uploaded the file:

• No option to start from your resume at all: the employer may have turned resume parsing off for this application.
• The upload works but every field stays empty: a parsing fault on the employer's site, or a file the parser cannot read.
• Most fields fill, but Skills and Languages stay empty: expected, because Workday does not fill those fields from a resume.
• Fields fill with the wrong things, such as dates on the wrong job or two roles merged into one: the layout or word order of the file.

The employer turned resume parsing off.

Workday's documentation says an employer can set up a job application template to switch off resume parsing for external candidates, for example on jobs that do not need a resume. On those applications, no file you upload fills the form. Choose to apply manually, type the fields in, and attach your resume where the application asks for it.

Every employer sets up its own Workday site, so the same resume can autofill on one company's site and not on the next. That is a setting, not a problem with your file.

Skills and Languages never fill from a resume.

Workday's resume parsing documentation says it does not auto-fill the Languages and Skills fields, or any field the employer set as hidden. Expect to enter skills and languages yourself on the page, whatever your resume says.

Fix the file so the parser can read it.

Workday says parsing results vary with a resume's format and the order of its words, and that resumes without images or image-based styles give the best results. George Mason University's career services gives the same advice for applicant tracking systems in general: a single-column layout with no tables, text boxes or charts, standard section names, your name in the body rather than a header, and a .docx file unless the employer asks for a PDF. Before you upload again:

• Export a copy with one column and no tables, text boxes or graphics.
• Put your name and contact details in the body of the page, not the header or footer.
• Use plain section headings such as Experience, Education and Skills.
• Write every role in the same order: employer, title, dates, then bullets.
• Check that you can select the text in the file. An image of text gives the parser nothing to read.
• Upload a .docx if the site accepts it, unless the employer asks for a PDF.

When the employer's site is at fault.

Parsing is a service on the employer's Workday site, and it can fail for every applicant at once. In June 2025 the Nevada System of Higher Education posted an alert that resume parsing on its Workday career site was not filling application fields, and told applicants they could still finish and submit by entering the information themselves.

If a clean file fills nothing on one employer's site but fills fields elsewhere, that is the likely cause. Type the fields in, or come back later. Do not start a second application to the same posting to retry, since that can create a duplicate.

Check every page before you submit.

Even when autofill works, treat it as a first draft. The employer receives the fields you submit as well as the file you attached, so a wrong date on the form is wrong whatever your resume says. If you applied to the same company before, its site may offer to reuse your last application. Check that every page is still current before you continue.
