How to autofill job applications without retyping your resume

Choose the kind of autofill you need.

There are three different jobs hidden in the word autofill. Start with the work you keep repeating, then choose the smallest tool that handles it.

• Browser autofill: reuse saved contact details on forms. Google documents how Chrome stores and fills this information, with compatibility limits.
• Resume import: upload a file and let the employer portal extract your history. Check the resulting fields even when the attachment looks correct.
• Job application assistant: reuse a career profile, prepare application materials and fill supported employer forms. Check the tool's actual coverage and sending settings.

Prepare one accurate source profile.

Keep your current contact details, employment dates, education and professional links together. Use the same factual history for each application. Save your main resume separately from versions tailored to individual roles.

A useful setup check is to compare one job in your profile with the same job on your resume. Employer, title and dates should agree. If the source is wrong, automating its reuse only repeats the mistake.

Fill one application before filling several.

Choose a real role that fits your search. Open its employer application, use the supported autofill workflow and inspect each step before proceeding. A job board listing and the employer portal it links to can be different sites; compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with the other.

For a Chrome extension, verify that the extension is enabled and allowed on the current site. For a dashboard-based application assistant, follow the application status and any request for missing information. Do not install several competing form fillers just to make a field work.

Check these fields before you continue.

Illustrative example: your profile says you worked at Example Company from June 2023 to August 2024. An import places August 2024 in the start-date field. Correct the saved field and check it again on the next step. A correct date printed on the PDF does not repair a wrong form value.

• Contact details: confirm the email and phone number belong to you.
• Experience: confirm each title, employer and date belongs to the same role.
• Questions: check eligibility, location and availability against your current circumstances.
• Documents: open the attached resume and make sure it is the version intended for this role.
• Submission: look for a confirmation or a verified application status before treating the application as sent.

If autofill misses a field, fix the cause.

A blank field may be unsupported, require a dropdown selection, or ask for information missing from your profile. Select the correct option rather than assuming that typed text was accepted. If a resume import scrambles several roles, repair the source file and compare the form against it.

On Workday or another multi-step employer portal, check every page as it saves. A tool filling contact details does not prove it can handle every employer-specific question. Keep the job link and the step that failed if you need support.
