What tailoring changes, and what it must not.

Tailoring is selection and emphasis. For one posting, it moves the most relevant experience up, uses the posting's words where they truthfully describe what you did, and leaves out detail that does not help this reader. It does not add employers, titles, dates, tools, numbers or responsibilities you do not have.

When a requirement has no evidence on your resume, the honest result is a gap, not a new line. Seeing the gap is useful: it tells you whether the job is worth applying to, and what to say about it in an interview.

An example, before and after.

Illustrative example, with a made-up resume and posting. The posting is for a data analyst intern and asks for SQL, dashboards and explaining findings to people who are not analysts. The sample resume lists these two roles, in this order:

• Before: Treasurer, Campus Film Society. Managed the club budget and kept its records in spreadsheets.
• Before: Research assistant, Psychology Lab. Cleaned survey data and wrote SQL queries for the lab's database.
• After: the research role moves above the club role, because it holds the posting's first requirement, and reads: Wrote SQL queries against the lab's survey database and cleaned the data for analysis. Same facts, in the order and words the posting uses.
• Not allowed: Built dashboards to present findings to stakeholders. The sample resume never mentions a dashboard, so this line would be invented, however well it matches the posting. Dashboards stay a gap until the applicant adds real dashboard work to their main resume.
