About the job

Inpatient Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) - Prescott Valley, AZ Overview & Highlights: Location: Prescott Valley, AZ - on-site in the greater Prescott area; a mile-high, high-desert community with four mild seasons and quick access to hiking, lakes, and northern Arizona's pine country. Schedule: 7 days on / 7 days off, Monday through Sunday. Eight-hour days - either 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with a one-hour lunch, or 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM without a lunch break. Benefits eligibility may vary based on employment classification. Position Type: Temporary or permanent, W2 or 1099 - based on provider preference. Setting: Inpatient psychiatric/behavioral health.

Location & Logistics: Work Environment: On-site, inpatient psychiatric and behavioral health service. Coverage Model and Hours: Two providers alternate weekly coverage - seven consecutive days on, Monday through Sunday, then seven days off. Eight scheduled hours per day. Daily Caseload: Approximately 12 inpatient psychiatric patients, on a service that typically maintains an overall census of about 24. Travel: Local travel between inpatient facilities may be required. On-Call: No overnight call. On-call coverage may be requested based on coverage needs. Interdisciplinary Team: Physicians, nursing staff, therapists, case managers, and support staff already in place.

About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life: Your day is built around two things: admitting new patients and moving your established patients forward. You carry a daily caseload of roughly 12 inpatient psychiatric patients on a service that usually runs a census of about 24, so the work is substantial but bounded - you know who your patients are when you arrive.

Admissions mean initial psychiatric evaluations, diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, admission orders, and the admission paperwork that goes with them. Follow-ups mean daily visits with established patients: reassessing symptoms, tracking clinical progress, adjusting psychotropic medications, monitoring treatment response and side effects, and updating the plan of care as the picture changes.

The population is acute. You will manage serious mental illness, behavioral health crises, and co-occurring substance use disorders, and you will be the provider the nursing staff comes to when a patient's status shifts during the day. Treatment team discussions, clinical case reviews, and discharge planning are part of the normal week, as is coordinating consultations and referrals when something medical or psychiatric needs another set of eyes.

Because two providers alternate weekly coverage, clean handoffs matter. Timely, accurate notes are not administrative overhead here - they are how the service runs, and how the provider following you picks up your patients without losing ground.

Why This Role Stands Out: A real week off, every other week. Seven days on, seven days off - not a nominal flex arrangement, but a full week away from the unit. No overnight call. Your clinical responsibility sits inside your scheduled hours. A defined daily caseload of roughly 12 patients rather than an open-ended panel. Full-scope inpatient psychiatric practice - admissions, diagnosis, medication management, treatment planning, and discharge, start to finish. Employment flexibility: temporary or permanent, W2 or 1099, based on your preference. An established inpatient service with an interdisciplinary team already in place, so you are joining a working unit rather than building one.

What We're Looking For: At least two years of inpatient psychiatric experience as a PMHNP. A clinically confident provider who is comfortable managing an assigned inpatient caseload independently. Strong diagnostic reasoning and psychotropic medication management skills. Disciplined documentation habits - admission paperwork, progress notes, and discharge records completed accurately and on time. Organized, dependable, and adaptable under the pace of an acute inpatient service. A collaborative communicator who works well with nursing, therapy, case management, and physician colleagues.

Job Duties & Responsibilities: Provide comprehensive psychiatric care to an assigned daily caseload of approximately 12 inpatient patients. Perform psychiatric admissions, including initial evaluations, diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, and admission orders. Complete admission forms, clinical notes, assessments, and related documentation accurately and promptly. Conduct daily follow-up evaluations for established inpatient psychiatric patients, assessing symptoms and monitoring clinical progress. Prescribe, manage, and monitor psychiatric medications, including treatment response and potential adverse effects. Manage patients presenting with acute psychiatric conditions, serious mental illness, behavioral health crises, and co-occurring substance use disorders. Develop and update individualized psychiatric treatment plans based on patient needs and clinical progress. Evaluate patients for changes in psychiatric status and respond to urgent clinical needs during scheduled working hours. Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, therapists, case managers, and other professionals to coordinate patient care. Participate in treatment team discussions, clinical case reviews, and discharge planning. Coordinate consultations, referrals, and additional medical or psychiatric evaluations when clinically indicated. Support safe patient transitions through admission, ongoing treatment, and discharge, including discharge documentation. Maintain timely, accurate electronic medical records in line with clinical and regulatory standards. Perform the additional clinical and administrative duties needed for the efficient operation of the inpatient psychiatric service, and adhere to applicable clinical policies, patient safety protocols, and professional practice standards.

Required Qualifications: Minimum of two years of inpatient psychiatric experience as a PMHNP. Active Arizona RN and APRN licensure. Current PMHNP board certification. Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Current Arizona prescribing and dispensing authority. Active DEA registration. Ability to obtain or maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card. Demonstrated experience with inpatient psychiatric admissions, daily patient management, and clinical documentation. Strong working knowledge of psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotropic medication management. Experience managing patients with acute psychiatric conditions and co-occurring substance use disorders. Ability to independently manage a daily caseload of approximately 12 inpatient psychiatric patients. Strong organizational skills, with the ability to complete admission paperwork, progress notes, and other required documentation efficiently. Excellent clinical judgment, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

Preferred Background: Valid driver's license. Inpatient psychiatric assessment experience. Psychiatric medication management experience. Crisis stabilization experience. Available to work on-site in the Prescott area. Available for an alternating weekly coverage schedule.

This Role Is Likely a Fit If You… You like inpatient psychiatry and want the whole arc of care - admission, stabilization, and discharge. You want a predictable, defined caseload and a schedule you can plan your life around. You are comfortable working at the top of your license and making clinical decisions day to day. You value an every-other-week stretch of real time off more than a conventional five-day week. You document as you go and take handoffs seriously. You want flexibility in how you are engaged - temporary or permanent, W2 or 1099.

This Role May Not Be a Fit If You… You have less than two years of inpatient psychiatric experience as a PMHNP. You do not hold active Arizona RN and APRN licensure. You are not currently board certified as a PMHNP. You do not hold current Arizona prescribing and dispensing authority. You do not hold an active DEA registration. You did not graduate from an accredited nursing program.

Why Join Us: We are a compassionate, patient-centered behavioral health team providing high-quality psychiatric care to people in acute distress. The schedule is deliberate: a 7-on, 7-off rotation with no overnight call, so the providers who do this demanding work get a genuine week to recover. Competitive compensation, a full benefits package, and flexibility in how you are engaged round out what we think is an unusually balanced inpatient psychiatric role.

If you meet all of our criteria and would like to be considered, please apply with your most updated Resume/CV. Cover Letter and references are preferred but optional. We look forward to meeting with you!
