Introduction to the job Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fibers fibers are critical components to enable ASML's advanced light sources, which in turn power our metrology systems. Fabrication of these fibers need state-of-the art glass manufacturing technologies in highly specialized clean facilities. Technical challenges are manifold including control of hydrodynamic effects during many stages of the fiber draw, advanced qualification and data analysis, correct pre-fiber process design, advanced problem solving and more. And organizationally, we need to secure safe work environments, structured planning & reporting to our stakeholders, managing suppliers as well as dealing with unique blend between academic and industrial environment in a remote location.
Role and responsibilities As fiber drawing engineer, you work partially in a clean room based, high-tech fiber manufacturing facility as well as in advanced optical laboratories, where you take end-to-end ownership of (part) the fiber development and production process. This includes identifying and understanding problems, proposing and engineering solution directions, sourcing in material, implementing and testing.
Together with the team you also contribute to other stages of the fiber drawing process, starting from raw material characterization, preform assembly, drawing fibers, to their qualifications, and eventual shipping.
Dealing with suppliers as well as our academic partner who provides clean room facilities, of will be part of your role. This includes aspects of technical supply/academic management. Integrating submodules in the tower line requires you to have basic mechanical, software and electronics experience.
You timely flag problems as well improvements ideas for production output and yield to colleagues management.
You use your experience in the fiber domain to propose advanced manufacturing and diagnostic technologies, that may help in improving yield and performance of the fibers.
You work closely with a specialized team of fiber drawing experts and our technology partner.
You report within your team, to management in Erlangen and Veldhoven and should be comfortable working in a small and remote team.
Critical deliverables of this position include timely providing sufficient fiber material of the right quality, reporting and planning, technical documentation, successful troubleshooting and solution implementation.
Education and experience You have a Master or Ph.D. (degree in the technical areas of Material Science, Fiber Optics or a similar technical field) with 3-5 years relevant work experience.
Affinity towards fine mechanical work and craftsmanship with glass is essential.
Skills Hands-on experience with optical fibers, specialty fibers or hollow-core fibers manufacturing.
Experience with quality control of processes as well as advanced troubleshooting.
Deep theoretical knowledge of the (hollow-core) fiber process and helicopter view on the landscape of HC-PCFs.
Works independently after onboarding & training is completed
Affinity with stock management, statistical/data analysis, and logistics to deliver the fibers to different locations.
First line leadership experience is preferred
Excellent communication skills to explain complex technical problems to stakeholders
Basic planning skills are needed to contribute to a reliable way forward
Work in clean rooms areas and high-tech facilities
Integration of submodules: basic mechanical design, software (MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW) and electronics knowledge
Able to work in multi-disciplinary teams within a high-tech environment.
