Technical Product Manager – Performance and Quality
Job Description
Compensation details will be shared by the recruiter during the first interview.
So, who are we?
IG Group is a FTSE 100 fintech operating across five continents, serving over 1.4m customers and handling billions of dollars in transactions – built on scale, trust, and proof. We didn't pivot to innovation; it's how we've always operated. What that means for the people who work here is real: genuinely complex problems to solve, the technology and resources to tackle them properly, and the kind of scope that's rare in established businesses.
The bar is high – bring a curious and forward-thinking mindset and we'll give you the platform to define what comes next.
Join us at IG – the future gets built here.
About the role:
This role owns the product direction, roadmap and outcomes for Performance Engineering and Quality Engineering within Infrastructure & Operations. You will shape shared capabilities that help engineering teams test earlier, detect risk sooner and release reliable, performant software with confidence.
You will work at the intersection of specialist performance and quality engineers, software delivery teams, platform engineers and technology leadership. The role combines strong product management with sufficient technical depth to understand how automated testing, non-functional testing and quality controls integrate with CI/CD pipelines and the wider software delivery lifecycle.
Your role in the Team’s Success:
Performance Engineering builds reusable components for performance testing and acceptance environments, including pipeline integrations, load generation, mocking, ephemeral environments and observability. Quality Engineering provides scalable test solutions, quality tooling, engineering metrics, contract testing, acceptance testing and synthetic monitoring.
Your focus is to turn these capabilities into accessible, measurable internal products that solve real engineering problems. You will bridge the needs of platform builders and consuming teams, while engineering leads retain ownership of technical design and day-to-day delivery.
What you’ll do:
Define and own a coherent product strategy and prioritised roadmap across Performance Engineering and Quality Engineering. Position performance and quality capabilities as internal products, with clear users, problems, propositions, service boundaries and measurable outcomes. Balance strategic investment, reliability improvements, adoption work and emerging engineering requirements using evidence and agreed prioritisation principles. Connect the roadmap to broader engineering goals, including faster feedback, safer releases, improved delivery performance and reduced production risk. Discovery & stakeholder engagement
Run structured discovery with software engineers, quality engineers, performance engineers, platform teams and engineering leaders to identify high-value problems. Translate user needs, delivery constraints and technical risks into clear product requirements, outcomes and prioritised backlog items. Partner with engineering leads and architects to validate feasibility, understand trade-offs and sequence work without prescribing the technical solution. Build alignment across stakeholders, communicate decisions clearly and maintain transparency on product direction, progress, dependencies and risks. Delivery, backlog & planning
Own planning and backlog management, ensuring initiatives, features and epics are outcome-led, well defined and ready for engineering delivery. Work closely with engineering teams to manage scope, dependencies, trade-offs and release priorities, while engineering leads own execution and technical delivery. Define acceptance criteria and success measures before delivery, and use evidence after release to decide whether to iterate, scale or stop. Maintain an actionable roadmap and provide concise, evidence-based updates to senior technology stakeholders. Adoption & continuous improvement
Define adoption strategies for shared testing frameworks, pipeline components, quality standards, performance tooling and engineering insights. Reduce friction for consuming teams through clear onboarding paths, enablement, reusable patterns and effective feedback loops. Monitor adoption, product health and engineering outcomes, using qualitative and quantitative evidence to improve the product continuously. Promote shift-left quality and performance practices so that risks are identified during design and delivery rather than after release. What you’ll need:
Hands-on background as an automated test engineer, SDET, quality engineer or closely related technical role, with strong understanding of test automation and modern software delivery. Practical understanding of how quality functions integrate with CI/CD pipelines, including automated checks, quality gates, test stages, reporting and feedback loops. Experience with non-functional testing, particularly performance, load, stress, scalability, reliability or resilience testing. Product management or delivery leadership experience covering product planning, discovery, roadmap and backlog management, stakeholder alignment and delivery prioritisation. Ability to translate complex engineering problems into clear product outcomes, requirements, acceptance criteria and success measures. Good understanding of the software development lifecycle, DevOps practices, cloud platforms, APIs, observability and modern testing approaches. Credibility with engineers: able to discuss architecture, tooling choices, test strategy and delivery-pipeline trade-offs without needing to design or code the solution. Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, including the ability to align specialist teams, platform users and senior technology leaders. Comfortable using data to prioritise investment and measure impact, while recognising where qualitative discovery is needed. Experience driving adoption or behavioural change across engineering teams in a matrix or distributed organisation. Desirable
Experience productising shared test automation frameworks, developer tooling, engineering platforms or internal enablement services. Familiarity with contract testing, mocking, synthetic monitoring, ephemeral test environments and acceptance testing. Familiarity with performance-testing tools such as k6, Gatling or Locust, and with interpreting performance results and regressions. Exposure to engineering metrics such as DORA, defect trends, test coverage, escaped defects, pipeline pass rates or service-level indicators. Experience with GitLab or similar CI/CD platforms, cloud environments, infrastructure as code, containers and observability tooling. Experience in a regulated industry such as financial services or fintech. What success looks like
Success measures will be baselined and agreed with engineering leadership. They are expected to include:
Performance and quality capabilities are represented through a clear, current and trusted roadmap. Priority services have defined non-functional requirements and meaningful performance baselines. Performance and quality checks are embedded earlier in delivery pipelines, with regressions and defects detected before production. Adoption of supported automation frameworks, pipeline components, synthetic monitoring and testing patterns increases across engineering teams. Friction to onboard and use shared capabilities reduces, supported by measurable user feedback. Engineering leaders have clearer visibility of quality, delivery and performance risks through agreed metrics and insights. Backlog and investment decisions are traceable to user problems, strategic priorities and measurable outcomes. What this role does not own
Day-to-day delivery management of the Performance Engineering or Quality Engineering teams, which remains with engineering leadership. Technical architecture or detailed test-design decisions, which remain with architects and senior engineers. People management of engineers. Execution of application-team testing on behalf of delivery teams; the role focuses on shared capabilities, standards, adoption and outcomes. Incident response or operational ownership for production services.
