Horace Mann is seeking an experienced and collaborative Counselor, Administrative Referral to support members and client organizations through ESI’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). In this role, you will support employees referred through the Administrative Referral Program, providing telephonic assessment, coaching, training and connections to appropriate services and resources.
You will manage cases from initial referral through completion while partnering with Human Resources professionals, supervisors and service providers to coordinate support. This position combines member assistance, case management and workplace consultation to address concerns with professionalism, sound judgment and care.
The ideal candidate brings experience in EAP counseling, clinical behavioral health or professional Human Resources, along with strong consultation skills and the ability to navigate sensitive employee and workplace situations.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative Referral & Case Management
Manage Administrative Referral cases from initial intake through completion, including coordination of services, documentation and follow-up. Coordinate referrals to network providers and complete session authorizations. Research and identify appropriate services, providers and resources based on member needs. Connect members with financial, legal, personal assistance and work-life resources. Collaborate with colleagues to support case management, case completion and follow-up activities.
Member Assessment & Support
Conduct telephonic triage and assessments related to behavioral health, substance use, relationship and work-life concerns. Provide immediate support, coaching and training based on identified needs. Apply knowledge of behavioral health conditions and appropriate levels of care to guide recommendations. Make sound clinical determinations in accordance with company risk policies and the best interests of the member and organization.
Client Consultation & Collaboration
Consult with Human Resources professionals and supervisory personnel from client organizations regarding employee concerns and applicable HR practices and policies. Partner with service providers and client contacts to coordinate appropriate support throughout the referral process. Use strong communication and professional judgment when addressing sensitive member and workplace concerns.
Documentation & Professional Standards
Maintain timely, accurate and professional documentation within the case management system. Handle Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and company policies. Maintain current knowledge of industry practices, professional ethical standards and applicable licensure requirements. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling or another behavioral health-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional Human Resources experience. At least five years of experience in Employee Assistance Program counseling, clinical behavioral health or a professional Human Resources role. Strong assessment, triage, immediate-support, research and case management capabilities. Knowledge of general Human Resources standards and practices. Knowledge of behavioral health conditions and appropriate levels-of-care recommendations. Understanding of HIPAA requirements and the appropriate handling of PHI. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office and other Windows-based programs and applications. Strong communication, consultation, organization, judgment and documentation skills.
Preferred Credentials
Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification. Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) certification. An active, current and unrestricted professional license in the state of employment may be required based on the assigned geographic area and responsibilities.
Pay Range: $66,500.00 - $92,000.00 annually + bonus
Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.
